Animal Kingdom just won the Kentucky Derby, beating 20-1 odds in his first dirt track race. So we of course toasted his victory with a mint julep. Mint juleps are thick with tradition, and I’m probably stepping on many, many toes by saying this one was a bit slap-dash.
Parker’s Heritage Cask Strength bourbon, because that’s what was in the booze drawer. Quickie simple syrup that may or may not have been 1:1. Mint picked fresh from the garden. Ice from the grocery store. And a tin camping cup, because it I don’t own julep cups. Stirred ’til frosty. Against the odds, it worked.
